When The Killers played Colchester Arts Centre…

Hi Laura

Yesterday was my niece’s birthday. I always think of the Arts Centre on her birthday because on the 6th July, 2004 I saw The Killers play here supported by Death From Above and The Departure. 2 of those bands did rather well following that gig. It’d make a good story to say that I missed my niece’s 11th birthday party to attend that gig but that wouldn’t be entirely true. Even so, happy birthday for yesterday, Beth.

Anyway, it got me thinking. What is the most memorable event you’ve been to here at our lovely venue? And why? It’d be great to start archiving some Colchester Arts Centre memories and you can do so via this Facebook thread we’ve just created. Or reply to this email if social media isn't for you.

But looking forward, the listings for July are below. My gig of the week has to be Asperger’s Are Us on Tuesday night. They are first comedy troupe of people with Asperger’s - and word is that they are brilliant. Check out the trailer for their recent Netflix documentary.

That’s all from me this week. Have a great weekend!

COMEDY

ASPERGER’S ARE US

Hot on the heels of the recently released self-titled Netflix documentary, the first comedy troupe of people with Asperger's perform their dark, absurdist sketches followed by an always popular Q&A.

"Weird as the performances were, they were in line with the type of sketch I like from Kids in the Hall or Whitest Kids U’Know oddball characters, goofy premises, and clever wordplay. As a neurotypical person who is generally ignorant of autism, I didn’t know what to make of the Asperger’s aspect of the act. As a discriminating fan of alternative comedy, I ate it up." – Philadelphia Weekly

FILM

CLASSIC HORROR NIGHTS DOUBLE BILL!

SATANIC RITES OF DRACULA + THE ABOMINABLE DR PHIBES

The third in a short season of vintage horror classics presented by Colchester soundtrack artist and horror aficionado Jason Frederick. For this, the final instalment, we're treating you to a double bill!

SATANIC RITES OF DRACULA

In London in the 1970s, Scotland Yard police investigators think they have uncovered a case of vampirism. They call in an expert vampire researcher named Van Helsing (a descendant of the great vampire-hunter himself, no less) to help them put a stop to these hideous crimes. It becomes apparent that the culprit is Count Dracula himself, disguised as a reclusive property developer, but secretly plotting to unleash a fatal virus upon the world.

THE ABOMINABLE DR PHIBES

Doctors are being murdered in a bizarre manner: bats, bees, killer frog masks, etc., which represent the nine Biblical plagues. The crimes are orchestrated by a demented organ player with the help of his mute assistant. The detective is stumped until he finds that all of the doctors being killed assisted a Dr. Vesalius on an unsuccessful operation involving the wife of Dr. Phibes, but he couldn't be the culprit, could he? He was killed in a car crash upon learning of his wife's death...
