Summer begins at SOHO20

This week marks the start of our summer 2017 Residency Lab, and we are excited to welcome Dana Davenport and Sarah G Sharp as our Artists in Residence! As a part of the summer program, both artists will be holding events at the gallery as extensions of the projects they will be workning on. More information below, and more still to come.


SOHO20 is excited to welcome the 2017 Residency Lab artists: Dana Davenport and Sarah G Sharp, who will join us as Artists in Residence from July 7 – August 18, 2017. Both artists will be leading a series of events and workshops, and we hope you will join us throughout the summer!

Dana's #1 Braiding Salon

Fri. July 14, 7-10pm


The studio space will be transformed into a hair braiding salon, serving as a space for folks to come together, gossip and leave with a fly hairdo. There will be a selection of styles, simple cornrows, and twists, for guests to choose from, by Joyce & Jessica Gayo. 

Participants can RSVP for appointments in advance to secure a spot, otherwise appointments will be on a first come, first served basis.

Tool Share Roundtable: Art and Activism

Tool Share Roundtable: Art and Activism gathers politically engaged members of our creative community to address activism, art practices and self-care in this time of deep uncertainty and resistance. Panelists will discuss and assess the current political landscape on global, national and regional levels and share “tools” regarding art production, political action and sustaining our communities and ourselves.

Tool Book Reading Series

Fri. July 21, 7-9pm

Contributors to Tool Book will read original and found texts. These may include: A meaningful text. A radicalizing text. An edifying text. A soothing text. A poem. Song lyrics.

“Tool Book” is a new project that compiles texts, images and objects that edify, inspire, support and radicalize members of the creative communities in this time of deep uncertainty and resistance.

Black Mixed Identity: A Meet-up & Discussion

Sun. July 23, 3-6pm


Dana Davenport welcomes you to join a meetup to connect and discuss the complexities around Black mixed identity. From personal to political narrative, lack of belonging, privilege and all the confusion in between. Davenport will be discussing her practice and calling out anti-blackness in Asian cultures. Guests are encouraged to share artwork, literature, and other materials that are related.

*All are welcome, however, the event will be centering Black experiences.
