Cinema can be extraordinarily good at making us understand what it's like to live another kind of life; in particular, it can give prominence to lives that aren't usually explored in the mainstream.


Beginning our next strand of Cinema Matters: The Battle for Representation, Marlon Riggs's documentary Tongues Untied gives voice to gay, black men to express what it's like to be on the outside in different ways. It's preceded by the writer Jean Genet's only film – initially banned in France for its explicit content – in which a prison guard covets the passionate relationship between two male inmates.
